Twelve Quick Things You Can Do to Make Your Day Instantly Better

Times are tough. You know that, I know that, we all know that. The biggest stories of 2020 have not been positive. People feel that they can’t escape the negativity, that it’s consuming the entire world.
Fortunately, global issues and overwhelming pressures do not have to consume every moment of your day. You have more power than you think. You can create smaller, positive moments that make a difference. The smallest actions throughout the day can significantly change how you see the world, yourself, and your situation. You owe it to yourself to create those small moments of joy, relief, and optimism.
Don’t think that your serious job or long to-do list should prevent you from indulging in a little joy. Positivity and productivity influence each other more than you might think. Doom and gloom doesn’t motivate you to keep pushing forward. A more optimistic outlook gives you fuel, boosts creativity, and is simply more enjoyable.
So, here’s a list of small things that you can do right now to make your day better. Try one, try two, or try every item on this list. Each item takes less than five minutes to complete. You’ll have a smile on your face and more energy in your system before you know it.
- Write five things that make you smile. Thinking about things that make you feel happy or gratitude can give your mood a boost. When you write them down, you can carry these things with you all day. Don’t think too hard. You can be happy that you have food in your fridge or clean water coming out of your tap. These count — so write them down!
- Fill up your Brita filter. Stay with me here. You know those small tasks that you have to do throughout the day? For me, it’s filling up my Brita so I’m not waiting around for filtered water. Your small task might be making your bed, watering the plants, or re-ordering dog food. These tasks are not urgent, but they make your life more convenient when you do them early. Take a moment to complete a small task. You’ll thank yourself later, and can mentally check off something on your to-do list.
- Do 20 jumping jacks. Yes, I said jumping jacks. They’re not just for elementary school kids. A quick set of jumping jacks will get your heart pumping and your muscles moving. Sure, it feels silly — that’s the point. Who does jumping jacks with a frown? If you feel ridiculous, keep jumping until you feel yourself crack a smile.
- Dance. Congrats, you did 20 more jumping jacks than you did yesterday! Or, you didn’t! But you got out of bed this morning! This calls for a celebration. Turn on your favorite song and dance around your house. Why? Who cares? There doesn’t really have to be a reason. Just dance and enjoy a minute or two without the responsibilities of work or news headlines weighing you down. Again, who dances while frowning?
- Schedule a nap. Don’t want to engage in physical activity? That’s okay. Schedule a nap in the early afternoon instead. A quick 20-minute nap can reset your focus without putting you into a deep sleep. It’s the perfect answer to your 2:30 slump.
- Stretch! Reach your arms up over your head and reach for the ceiling. Don’t you feel a change in your body already? Spend some time every hour stretching, walking, or moving around. Sitting at a desk (or on the couch) all day stiffens the body. Stay loose!
- Tense your shoulders up to your ears. Squeeze them up with all of your might on an inhale. Keep squeezing — and on your exhale, let out a huge sigh and let your shoulders drop. This allows your posture, mood, and focus to reset.
- Drop some essential oils in your diffuser. If you don’t have a diffuser, drop essential oils in the bottom of your shower before turning on the water. - Thank someone for being a great person. Send a text. Write a letter. Pick up the phone. Train a carrier pigeon. Whatever you do, find a way to contact someone who means something to you: a friend, family member, the coworker who has the best gossip, etc. Thank them and remind them that they hold a special place in your life. You’ll feel better, they’ll feel better, we’ll all feel better!
- Put on a fresh pair of socks. Put on two mismatching socks, if you want to get really crazy. Wear one silly sock and one “serious” sock. Find the fuzziest socks in your drawer. No one is going to see your socks or bottom half on Zoom, anyway. Let this be a small reminder to crack a smile and loosen up a little bit. Who wears fuzzy socks while frowning?
- Take 10 deep breaths. Breathe in, breathe out. Long, steady breaths remind your body and mind that you are safe, alive, and calm.
